Lahontan Cutthroat Trout field tech

Trout Unlimited (TU) is seeking a Field Technician for work on a threatened population of Lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT) at Independence Lake in northeastern California. TU, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) are monitoring the numbers of spawning LCT and LCT fry in upper Independence Creek and removing non-native brook trout from the creek and its tributaries. The Field Technician will conduct surveys of LCT and other native and non-native fish species and will assist with removal of non-native fish and crayfish from upper Independence Creek and Independence Lake under the direction of TNC's Independence Lake Preserve Manager and State and Federal agency personnel.

The field site is remote, work is physically strenuous, and conditions can be uncomfortable (mountain environment – cold days and nights, occasional storms). The Technician must be in excellent physical condition, and live for long periods in a remote location. Work requires experience with backpack electro-shocking equipment, GPS units, data loggers, PIT tag readers. Fisheries background including electro-shocking experience a must. Must have experience operating small motorboats, four-wheel drive vehicles and towing trailers; should have the ability to trouble shoot equipment problems and other unforeseen situations; should be skilled at data collection, record keeping, compiling and summarizing data; should have the ability to work independently and well with others; and should be comfortable communicating with partner organizations and agencies, scientists and providing information to the general public.

Stipend is $2400/month; benefits are not included. Work begins ASAP and runs through approximately the first or 2nd week of October. The Technician begins and ends the season in Reno, NV, and must have an excellent driving record to be covered individually by our insurance. During work periods, the Technician will be expected to reside on-site; housing will be provided in a rustic camper. Vehicle, gas and propane will be provided by TNC.
