Trout Unlimited (TU) is seeking four (4) Field Technicians for work on a threatened population of Lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT) in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains of northeastern California. TU and California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) are removing non-native brook trout from the creek and its tributaries in addition to monitoring LCT populations and assessing the efficacy of mechanical nonnative removal techniques. The Field Technicians will assist CDFW and TU staff with nonnative fish removal and associated tasks. The field site is remote, work is physically strenuous, and conditions can be uncomfortable (mountain environment – cold days and nights, occasional storms). The Technician must be in excellent physical condition and be capable of living for eight days at a time in a remote location without modern conveniences. Work requires use of backpack electrofishing equipment, GPS units, data loggers, PIT tag readers, pumps, generators, and miscellaneous tools. Fisheries background, or knowledge of fisheries, is preferred, but no previous experience is necessary. Must have experience outdoors with camping, hiking, four-wheel drive vehicles, and be capable of carrying heavy loads (60+ lbs) over long distances (4+ miles) at high elevation (9000'). Key skills include the ability to trouble shoot equipment problems and other unforeseen situations, work as part of a diverse team, and the be able to listen and follow instructions. Stipend is $2560/month ($16/hr); benefits are not included. Work begins July 5th and runs through the 27th of September. Technicians hired for the 2016 season will have rehire eligibility for the 2017 season. The Technician begins and ends their 8-day-on-6 day-off work periods in Reno, NV. Transportation is provided to and from the work site. During work periods, the Technician will be expected to reside on-site, and will be required to provide their own tent, sleeping bag/pad, and food.
