580 volunteers cleaned-up 7.257 tons of trash - that's 14,500 pounds!!! Sweep-the-Hooch began four years ago. Last year 3.7 tons of trash was removed from the river and surrounding banks.
Upper Chattahoochee TU, National Park Service-Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper thank all the volunteers, site leaders and sponsors for stepping-up, pitching-in and leading last Saturdays event.
"Four years ago we set out to clean the entire Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, from Buford Dam to Paces Mill, 44 river miles, in one day" said Upper Chattahoochee TU Advocacy and Conservation Chairman Kevin McGrath. "This year we did that plus three state parks. Over the years, we have removed what you would expect - drink bottles, plastic bags and tennis balls, as well as some unusual items - a car frame, bicycles and even a kitchen sink! Congratulations to all the volunteers."
24 UCCTU members met to clean-up Jones Bridge for the 4th Annual Sweep the Hooch Clean-up on Saturday, April 12, 2014. We raged from the parking lot and canoe launch upstream past the iron bridge and downstream to the lower shoals. A group of members remained after the even to try their hand at catching some Chattahoochee River wild brown trout. Upper Chattahoochee was joined by Tailwaeter TU at Bowmans Island, Oconee River TU at Settles Bridge, Cohutta TU at Island Ford as well as the Georgia Womens Flyfishers and Middle Geogia TU at Whitewater Creek.
“We at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area sincerely appreciate the efforts of all of the volunteers and sponsors in cleaning up the river and trails here,” said Bill Cox, superintendent of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. “This kind of civic involvement led to the creation of this National Park Service unit back in 1978. It’s great to see this kind of spirit is still alive and well in metro Atlanta.”
Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Event Organizer Tammy Bates said "We plan to be back in 2015 for another dynamic cleanup.” We hope that you will too.
