Sweep-the-Hooch 2014

Why not clean-up 44 river miles in one day? Why not sweep clean the entire Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in one fell swoop? Why not have the largest river clean-up in Atlanta’s history? Why not? So we did!

That’s how Sweep-the-Hooch got started. Upper Chattahoochee Trout Unlimited, National Park  Service and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper partnered up in 2010 to invite members, friends, local governments and other organizations to turn out each spring for a massive, one-day clean-up. Last year, 550 volunteers removed 3.7 tons of rivers refuse with over a half ton recycled. This year’s clean-up is Saturday, April 12th.  We are growing by adding Gwinnett County’s Jones Bridge Park as well as reaching up and down the river to Sweetwater Creek, Chattahoochee Bend, Don Carter and Riverview Landing outside the National Park. The event is part of American Rivers National River Clean-up.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is hosting a dozen paddle clean-ups. National Park Service will be working the trails in ten park units and Trout Unlimited is sponsoring five wading clean-ups. Trout Unlimited and Georgia Women Flyfishers members should register as Waders with their chapter as their team name. Invite other members, friends, neighbors and co-workers to join the fun!

Trout Unlimited sponsored wading sites:

- Tailwater TU at Bowmans Island;
- Oconee River and Kanooka TU at Settles Bridge;
- Upper Chattahoochee TU at Jones Bridge;
- Cohutta TU at Island Ford;
- Georgia Women Flyfishers, Middle Georgia TU and Flint River TU at \Whitewater Creek.

More info about wading, paddling and trail clean-up sites can be found on our webpage www.SweepTheHooch.org.

Along with American Rivers - REI, WEG Electric, PTS Screen Printing, Republic Services and Hewlett Packard are sponsoring the event. We need your support to help cover our costs for equipment and supplies. For Sponsorship benefits and details email me at Conservation@UCCTU.org.

Register today. Spaces at many sites are limited. Save the date – Saturday, April 12, 2014.
