Trout Tips: The reach cast

Casting to perpendicular runs can be challenging–it’s often tough to get the right drift. Once anglers master the mend, the next tool that needs to be added to the tackle box to help get that perfect drift and send that fly downstream in a natural fashion is the reach cast.

Here, TU’s Kirk Deeter demonstrates the reach cast, which essentially involves reaching back across your body on your forward cast. The result, when done right, puts the fly line above the fly, making for a great drag-free drift that trout like when they’re on the prowl for food.

Don’t worry if it doesn’t come naturally. Practice, and you’ll get it. Good luck out there.
