Former Secretary of Interior and Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt
Trout Unlimited will host its annual San Francisco Gala on Tuesday, March 18. We are honored to present a Trout Unlimited Conservation Leadership Award to former U.S. Secretary of the Interior and Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt. Babbit served as governor from 1978 to 1987 and then served as Secretary of the Interior under the Clinton Administration from 1993 to 2001.
He is also one of the West's leading advocates for land protection, collaborative stewardship, and defense of our nation’s bedrock environmental laws.
As Governor, Babbitt brought environmental and resource management to the forefront in Arizona. He personally negotiated and steered to passage the Arizona Groundwater Management Act of 1980, which remains the most comprehensive water regulatory system in the nation. He was also responsible for creation of the Arizona Department of Water Resources, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, and a major expansion of the state park system.
Appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Clinton in 1993, Babbitt served for eight years, during which he led in the creation of the forest plan in the Pacific Northwest, restoration of the Florida Everglades, passage of the California Desert Protection Act, and legislation for the National Wildlife Refuge system.
Those attending the gala will have the opportunity to bid on some unique live and silent auction items at the celebration, including fishing trips to California, Colorado, Canada, Montana, Argentina, Honduras, as well as a few more specialized fishing adventures. There are some exciting meal packages and merchandise as well.
There is still time to register and attend the dinner. Cost of the event is $300 a person, and includes a TU membership. Other sponsorship opportunities are available. You can buy tickets online, and if you have any specific questions about the event, contact Nancy Bradley, TU's national events coordinator.
We hope you will join us in honoring Bruce Babbitt.
