The Public Lands Initiative (PLI) in California educates and promotes action among anglers and hunters to better protect and manage our public lands. The PLI also analyzes the fish and game values of backcountry areas, builds partnerships with resource agencies and other stakeholders, develops place-based solutions that conserve hunting and fishing values, and conducts outreach to college students to engage the next generation of sportsmen-conservationists. Those blank spots on USGS quadrangle maps -- areas with few to no roads -- offer some of the best habitat for many species of trout, salmon, and large game. The PLI identifies and helps conserve such areas where they are threatened by development, excessive human use, or simply would benefit from enhanced protection to keep them status quo -- that is, just as they are today.
- Through our PLI offices in Truckee and Salinas, we organize and manage local and statewide conservation campaigns to protect coldwater fisheries and the public lands they “call home”. Such actions help ensure that high-quality habitat, such as that provided by the headwaters of many California rivers, will continue to serve as a refuge for fish and wildlife populations, and as a source of cold, clean water for downstream trout and salmon fisheries and human uses.
- In 2006, TU played a key role in supporting Governor Schwarzenegger’s formal petition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture requesting permanent protection of all of California’s Inventoried Roadless Areas (4.4 million acres of Forest Service land). TU’s California Field Director, Sam Davidson, testified at the governor’s press conference on behalf of sportsmen (pictured above).
- TU is working with hunting and angling organizations throughout California to strengthen the sportsmen’s voice and advocate for better protection of our last, best public fish and game habitat: roadless and headwaters areas. TU helps focus and direct the California sportsman's voice to the appropriate levels and branch of government, and works with all media channels to publicize the opinions of anglers and hunters regarding long-term conservation of our fishing and hunting opportunities. We have launched a college-based outreach program to promote angling in California while engaging the next generation of sportsmen-conservationists in watershed and land stewardship.
