Trout Unlimited's Alaska Program works to preserve, protect and restore wild salmon and trout populations throughout Alaska. Through sound scientific data, strong grassroots outreach and advocacy, and hands-on involvement in conservation projects Trout Unlimited Alaska protects some of the most pristine and prized rivers on the planet, restores those that need some help, and engages the next generation of coldwater stewards in Alaska's natural heritage.

The Alaska staff focuses its work in two main regions: Southwest Alaska's Bristol Bay and Southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest.

Save Bristol Bay Campaign – Bristol Bay is a wild salmon stronghold and a world-class fishing destination.  It is currently at risk by the proposed development of a massive copper and gold mine called Pebble, located at the headwaters of the region's two most productive rivers. Learn more about how you can help protect this productive salmon and trout region.

Southeast Alaska/Tongass National Forest Salmon Conservation Projects – Salmon are an integral part of daily life in southeast Alaska and Trout Unlimited is developing plans to protect, restore and reconnect key salmon producing watersheds.  Learn more about our on-the-ground projects, conservation strategies and how you can help.

Other Programs and Resources

  • Why Wild - An innovative outreach program, WhyWild educates and engages consumers, chefs, retailers, seafood processors, fishermen and others in Trout Unlimited's on-the-ground wild salmon conservation work.   By encouraging consumers to "vote with their forks" for wild salmon, TU is able to reconnect salmon consumers with the wild places our wild salmon come from and the basic ingredients wild salmon need to thrive (eg, clean, free flowing water).  Doing so adds value to our wild salmon fisheries, and when something has value people work to protect it.
  • Bristol Bay Fly Fishing and Guide Academy - An Integrated River Education and Recreation Program. This weeklong, all-expenses-paid academy prepares young Bristol Bay community leaders with the knowledge and skills to serve as fly fishing guides and to uniquely engage in salmon conservation issues in their home communities.
