With funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Trout Unlimited (TU) and partner organizations have undertaken a comprehensive lakewide effort to conserve and restore the coaster brook trout to Lake Superior. There are three primary objectives for the project: to assess, protect, and rebuild remnant coaster brook trout populations and their associated lake and stream habitats; to reintroduce coaster brook trout in Lake Superior tributaries where they have been previously eliminated; and to develop technical communications and public education initiatives which will improve future restoration efforts.
New and on-going projects supported by funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Federation include research to assess the location and quality of coaster habitat in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Additional projects include reintroduction efforts along Michigan's Upper Peninsula where researchers and volunteers continue to examine the results of previous stocking efforts. Coinciding with these research and reintroduction efforts will be new projects to promote public awareness about the coaster and strengthen communication and understanding within the scientific community.
