TU Land Conservation Handbooks
How can Trout Unlimited chapters and councils help permanently protect coldwater fisheries? How can land trusts work with TU to accelerate the pace of land protection for trout and salmon streams? How can TU resources help prioritize and fund land protection? These are some of the questions addressed in TU’s new series of guides that lay out the foundation of the Land Protection Project. Created to be both accessible and detailed, these guides will help both TU chapters and land trusts partner to conserve important coldwater streams and watersheds.

A Guide for TU Chapters: Working with Land Trusts covers everything a TU grassroots volunteer needs to know about working with land trusts. Starting with the whats and hows of land trust operations, the handbook also covers the details of conservation easements and TU’s role in their creation, public angling access, funding and technical support, and communicating with landowners.|

A Guide for Land Trusts: Working with Trout Unlimited covers the basics of TU’s structure and history and focuses on how TU can help land trusts conserve, protect and restore coldwater streams and watersheds. Leveraging more funding with fisheries science, fundraising, grant programs for transaction costs and restoration projects and easement drafting for coldwater issues are some of the topics covered. Success Stories
TU has been collecting case studies and success stories that highlight a diverse and eye-opening set of projects that have been completed by, partnered with or assisted by TU staff, chapter volunteers and grassroots leaders. Some of the highlighted projects include:
- St. Joe River, ID - Example of TU partnering to support Working Forest Conservation Easements
- Upper Connecticut River, NH - Example of TU’s scientific expertise benefiting a major river corridor protection protect.
- Rocky Fork, TN - Example of TU’s advocacy for a watershed-scale land protection project in the East
- Vermont Creek, Dane County, WI - Example of local TU chapters assisting county and land trusts to secure permanent protection of lands originally protected with term easements
