March 7-9, 2014
Join fellow anglers and TU volunteer leaders from across the West on March 7-9 in Reno, Nev.
Who should attend?
Anyone committed to building effective TU chapters and councils.
What will you learn?
Opportunities abound to develop your governance skills and practices, discover solutions to your leadership challenges, and increase your understanding of the key trends and coldwater conservation issues impacting that particular region. TU regional meetings are occasions to be inspired – by the work of TU staff, lessons from leaders and conversations with newfound friends.
Registration and Cost?
The total cost is $150 and includes:
- Participation in all seminars and workshops on Saturday
- Breakfast and lunch on Friday and Saturday
- Barbecue dinner Friday night
Friday and Saturday, March 7-8 – Workshops and Seminars
The Western Regional Meeting is designed to provide TU volunteer leaders with valuable tools and skills you can bring home to help improve the effectiveness of councils and chapters. Saturday's full-day session will included group discussions, concentrated workshops and opportunities for council and chapter leaders to share successes and discuss common challenges. View the agenda.
Friday, March 7 – Evening Barbecue
Join us in south Reno for a Barbecue with a terrific view of the Truckee Meadows all washed down with some local beers, wine and soft drinks. This is always a great time and the perfect opportunity to get to know TU members from other parts of the region.
Saturday, March 8 – No Host Dinner and Fly Fishing Tour Screening
After the completion of the program on Saturday, attendees are invited to a traditional Basque dinner at one of Reno's oldest Basque restaurants, the Hotel Santa Fe. It is a quick ride from the hotel and offers all the hospitality and good food for which the Basque are so well known. And don't forget to try the traditional Basque cocktail – the Picon Punch – while you're there! Dinner will be $30 (cash only, including tip) for a seven course meal and choice of NY steak, pork or lamb shanks.
To close out the evening, the California council and the Sagebrush chapter are very excited to host a showing of the Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T)! This critically-acclaimed series of short films covers nearly every facet of fly fishing you know, and probably a couple that will be new to you. Western Regional Meeting attendees get in for free. These short films are always visually stunning, inspiring, thought-provoking, and often riotously funny. It'll be just the thing to motivate most of us through the remaining cold season and into spring fishing!
Sunday, March 9 – Optional Fishing Day
There will certainly be something for everyone. For those that are interested in trying to hook into a 10+lb cutthroat, it'll be prime time on Pyramid Lake. For the moving water enthusiasts, the fabled Truckee River flows right through the towns of Reno and Sparks and off into the hills. There will be urban fishing options (traditionally under-utilized) and rural options, including the Nature Conservancy preserve at McCarran Ranch. So depending on your preference, bring a 5-8wt rod and plan on a busy day of tight lines and big smiles on the wide variety of waters that the Reno area presents. Lunch will be provided by the Sagebrush chapter for those who wish to participate in either of these fishing options.
Sunday, March 9 – Women's Specific Seminar
This half-day session is designed to arm volunteer leaders with tools to help grow and maintain your women's membership and encourage the women in TU to become leaders within our organization. We will offer leadership training, membership growth/retention, event/activity planning, and time for networking, too! A $10 donation is requested to help us cover the cost of food. View the Agenda.
