The Hare's Ear Nymph
By: Anderson Smith
Step One: Measure the hen back fibers to match the length of the hook shank. Tie the tail off slightly above the hook bend.
Step Two: Wind the lead wire around 1/2 of the hook shank at its mid-section in order to weight the nymph.
Step Three: Tie the tinsel or wire off the base of the hook shank. Trim the darker fibers off the hare's mask and chop the hairs with your scissors to create rough dubbing.
Step Four: Wind the dubbing forward up 2/3 of the hook shank.
Step Five: Wind the tinsel/wire tightly around the body forming the thorax and tie off leaving 1/3 of the shank prepared for the upper thorax and wingcase.
Step Six: Cut a width of turkey tail fibers that measures twice the gap length between the shank and hook point. Fold the tail fiber section in half for strength and tie it off at the front of the thorax and on top of the hook.
Step Seven: Wind hare's mask dubbing just before the hook eye to finish the thorax. Create a wingcase over the top of the dubbing tying it off a touch short of the eye.
Step Eight: Loosen dubbing off the sides of the thorax with a brush, trim outlying fibers, whip finish, and cement.
