James River

Techniques

With the water temperature getting close to 50 degrees the smallmouth will start their migration to the spawning grounds. Look for some depth that has chunk rock, boulders and/or ledge bottoms. The fish feel secure and looking for that easy meal here. By crawling, hopping or swimming a claw dad pattern in these areas you stand to catch possibly your biggest fish of the year!
Shad have arrived !! Check with the crew at Orvis Richmond for day to day reports and tips.

Seven-day forecast

The conditions this week look to be the best of the spring. Get out and fish!!

Conditions

Fished the Maidens area in Goochland Wednesday. The James is running at 2500 CFS which is low for this time of year. Normal flow is 4000. Water temp is good at 79 degrees but the water is still quite stained. Some top water action late in the afternoon but streamers still showing the best results.

Swing by the Orvis Store at Short Pump Mall for gear and current fishing information.
