Contact Matt Braughler or Sarah Davies to reserve a spot. 29 Parties Come to Consensus on the Klamath After 20 years of fighting, one of America’s most divisive and intractable water wars may finally be ending. TU played a key role in negotiating the Klamath Dam agreement, which provides a pathway to removal of four dams on the river over the next decade. A companion agreement will launch the largest river restoration project in history. The two agreements represent the best chance of returning salmon to the Upper Basin in nearly a century. Read More.. Save Teton Canyon One of Idaho’s best kept secrets is Yellowstone cutthroat fishing amidst the soaring bluffs of Teton Canyon. In the 1970s, TU fought unsuccessfully against the Teton River dam, which ultimately failed, sending an eight-story wall of water toward the Snake River Plain. Eleven people were killed in the ensuing flood. This year, the state launched a controversial study to consider rebuilding the dam, and TU is once again calling for consideration of other, better ways to meet Idaho’s water needs. TU Testifies on Capitol Hill In November, COO Chris Wood testified before a Senate subcommittee exploring the question of how to manage public forests in response to climate change. Chris urged federal agencies to look beyond wilderness borders and develop strategies that protect, reconnect and restore entire watersheds. Watch a video of the hearing (Chris appears about 103 minutes in and speaks for roughly seven minutes) and read the testimony. Nothing Golden About Pebble Mine Tiffany&Co. launched an anti-Pebble Mine campaign this October with an ad in National Jeweler that read: "Despite the best of intentions, 175 years of experience sourcing gemstones and precious metals tells us that there are certain places where mining cannot be done without forever destroying landscapes, wildlife and communities. Bristol Bay is one such place." Thus far, 18 jewelers representing sales of more than $3.5 billion a year have joined Tiffany in vowing to boycott gold from the proposed mine, which threatens the best sockeye salmon fishery on Earth. Read more and take action. Obama Wets a Line on the Gallatin Veteran fishing guide Dan Vermillion spent a rainy day teaching in August the president to fly fish. The Angler in Chief didn’t catch anything, but Vermillion says “if I were a smallmouth bass on the Potomac, I’d be nervous.” Vermillion’s Sweetwater Travel Company is among more than 140 outfitters, guides and businesses that support TU.
