The United States Army Corps of Engineers consists of about 35,000 civilian and military engineers and scientists who oversee the construction of dams, bridges, military facilities, and other civil works projects. The Army Corps’ abandoned mine reclamation program was developed in 200 through the Water Resources Development Act. Aptly named Restoration of Abandoned Mines Sites (RAMS), the program was designed to enhance the activities of federal, state, and non-profit entities engaged in coal or non-coal mine reclamation work.
RAMS receives approximately $5 million per year to provide engineering and scientific support during the planning and design phases of abandoned mine reclamation projects. The program requires a 50% match for projects on non-federal lands and has been involved in over 50 projects to date.
