The Bear River Project seeks to ensure that large river, migratory fish thrive in those sections of the watershed where they still occur, and return to those sections where they are currently rare or absent. To that end the project has two primary objectives. First, we reconnect critical spawning tributaries in each of the five major sections of the Bear River. Biologists agree that barriers that prevent fish from moving between the Bear River and its tributaries are among the most significant limiting factors for Bear River BCT. To address that, TU and project partners identify movement barriers and retrofit the structures with fish ladders and screens to allow upstream passage around dams and prevent downstream loss of fish in irrigation canals. Our second objective is to implement collaborative projects to improve riparian and aquatic habitats in the reconnected tributaries and in the mainstem Bear River. Projects include riparian fencing, streambank stabilization, and riparian re-vegetation efforts to reduce sediment and nutrient inputs and improve in-stream habitat.
