While much of our work involves defending Colorado's rivers from new water withdrawals, the CWP is becoming more involved with the on-the-ground restoration of stream flows and aquatic habitat. Like our work in defense of stream flows, on-the-ground restoration efforts broaden the coalition of interests that support instream flows and act as an incubator for building stronger communities with more interest in river protection.
The focus of CWP restoration efforts is returning water to flow-impaired streams. We work with local TU chapters and others to identify water rights holders willing to use their water rights in ways that allow additional stream flow when fish need it most. We also work on agreements under which senior water rights are donated to the CWCB instream flow program to improve the aquatic environment, and we make recommendations to the CWCB [1] for the appropriation of new instream flow water rights on critical coldwater streams. The CWP has the expertise to design structural habitat features and stream channel modification projects that enhance trout habitat under low flow conditions. Because cooperation is the best method of conserving, protecting and restoring coldwater fisheries, the CWP actively seeks opportunities to work with landowners and water rights holders interested in finding creative ways to improve stream flow or fishery habitat.
