Kokanee salmon one step closer to protection
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the petition filed by TU and a broad coalition to protect Lake Sammamish kokanee salmon under the Endangered Species Act carries sufficient information to merit a one-year review of the landlocked sockeye salmon's status. Sportsmen help protect Idaho's backcountry
Trout Unlimited has worked for the last five years to protect the roadless backcountry of Idaho—all 9.3 million acres of it. Our hard work has paid off—we were successful in increasing the protection status of an additional 200,000 acres last week, when the state announced plans to upgrade the protective status of much of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. »Idaho State Journal article
Colorado modifies "use it or lose it" water law
The Governor of Colorado has signed legislation backed by Trout Unlimited to end the "use it or lose it" provision that penalizes water right holders who want to donate or lease water to the Colorado Water Conservation Board to improve stream flows for a given period of time. By removing the penalty, the new law protects water right holders who enter into long-term agreements to help protect flows to benefit trout. »Western Water Project - Colorado | »Denver Post article
