Position Summary

The Volunteer Operations Coordinator will help maintain and develop initiatives driven to help TU chapters and councils become stronger, more effective grassroots organizations. In this role, the Coordinator will serve as a principle point of integration between TU's national programs and its grassroots base. The job will require a high degree of coordination and outreach among volunteer leaders and staff at the local, state and national levels. One of the main objectives for this position will be to help chapters and state councils strengthen their own organizational capacity so that they are more successful at engaging their communities and achieving our mission on the local level. A successful candidate will have a deep passion for trout and salmon conservation issues, as well as experience with grassroots organizing. It is very important that candidates posses strong written and verbal communication skills, are able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, are detail oriented, are self-starters able to work independently of in-person supervision, and are willing to travel. Comfort and experience with database management or similar technology is imperative. Customer service will be a fundamental component to this job.

This is a national-level position with responsibilities for supporting volunteer leaders across the country. The position is located in Arlington, VA. Pay will be commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Expand and improve implementation of TU's Tacklebox, which is an online library of tools, resources and frameworks for chapters and councils to build organizational capacity. This position will make sure that content is useful, organized in a user-friendly format and readily available to volunteer leaders.
  • Drive communications between TU staff and chapter/ council officers with the ultimate goal of strengthening community organization-wide. Examples include, but are not limited to the delivery of reliable and informative communication pieces such as e-newsletters, web-based action alerts/ announcements, memo updates and conference calls. This position will own a subset of these communication vehicles and collaborate on others.
  • Participate in off-site trainings/workshops for volunteers. Responsibilities will consist of developing presentations, handling all trip and event logistics, and coordinating efforts with key volunteers and conservation staff to ensure the delivery of meaningful programs. It is expected this position will be responsible for supporting or coordinating some of the four regional volunteer training conferences held each year – with responsibilities including finding a venue and securing a contract, coordinating a volunteer planning committee, preparing meeting materials, handouts, pre- and post-event communications and more.
  • The processing of various administrative tasks such as sending out rebates, analyzing spreadsheets of chapter/ council financial data, working within the database to move large lists of ZIP codes between chapters, etc…
  • Collaborate with TU staff and volunteer leaders to develop meaningful opportunities that integrate TU volunteers with its national conservation programs.
  • Serve in a supporting role for TU's Headwaters Youth Program and Veterans Service Partnership by engaging volunteers in youth education and veterans service opportunities.
  • Be a friendly and familiar face of TU, committed to delivering high-quality customer service in a timely and comprehensive way.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with or demonstrated ability to quickly learn about grassroots organizing
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of applications, especially Excel
  • Experience with database management platforms and systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail
  • Ability to resolve complex issues involving multiple program areas independently
  • Good sense of humor
  • Passion for coldwater conservation
  • This position also requires:
    • Frequent travel
    • Evening and weekend hours
