Gear test: Carhartt Rain Defender jacket

I have worn Carhartt work jackets since I was in college. They are tough, durable, and unlike the rest of us, they look better as they age.

The Carhartt Rain Defender was my first foray into the company’s rain gear, and I was pleased. I took it carp fishing one cloudy day, and appreciated the four cargo-style pockets which are good for stuffing tippet, fly boxes, and an extra reel. It is a great alternative to a backpack, especially if you’re walking a lot looking for carp and their tell-“tail” mud plumes. The jacket runs large and loose, which I actually like as it makes it more comfortable to cast.

I also like the fact that the Rain Defender can be worn over outer-garments. It is lightweight. The perfect rain jacket for layering in the winter, and a stand-alone for the other three seasons.
