In the same boat
Rio Grande del Norte — the big river of the north. It cleaves New Mexico from north to south, a band of green in a hard, gray-brown country. The Norteños of northern New Mexico have fished this river and its tributaries — the Red, the Chama and the others — for hundreds of years. The Apache and Pueblo people have fished them for thousands of years. And the fish — las truchas — they were here long before all of us.
They’re still here in the difficult days of COVID-19. This pandemic has all of us on edge. Millions of us are under lockdown. Millions more are isolating themselves and practicing social distancing, limiting their personal contact with others. It’s a global pandemic, and it’s serious business. In communities across the U.S. and around the world, we’re all experiencing it. This is a time for us to support each other. After all, we’re all in the same boat.
No one has done more to support the fish and the people of the Rio Grande del Norte than the Streit Family at Taos Fly Shop. Taylor Streit founded this shop in 1980. Taylor is the patron here — the grandfather of fly fishing on these waters. His son Nick runs the shop now and serves as head guide. Nick has served in various capacities in of the Enchanted Circle Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and he was a driving force in the successful grassroots effort led by TU to protect the Rio Grande watershed through the establishment of Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. It’s a great shop run by great people, great conservationists and great TU supporters
What we do as fly anglers — what Trout Unlimited does as an organization — affects millions of others around the world. In a very real and very immediate sense, it affects our TU Business members like Taos Fly Shop. These members have supported us at every level of our organization from the local chapter banquet to the lobbying in Washington, DC. Now, it’s time for us to support them because we’re all in the same boat.
We’re asking all 300,000 Trout Unlimited members to support our Business members in these uncertain times. Buy some gift cards – in fact, buy a lot of gift cards. Buy some gear. If you can’t or don’t want to go in person, do it online or by phone. But do it. They aren’t nameless, faceless corporate entities. They’re real people with real families who depend on them. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be featuring some of them here. And we hope you’ll support them all. We’re all part of the TU Team.
