Video spotlight: Pirarucu

Arapaima can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh close to 500 pounds. That puts them among the largest freshwater fish on the planet.

And they’ll hit a fly.

Above is the trailer to Todd Moen’s Catch Magazine film Pirarucu, the story of chasing the giants in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. In typical Moen fashion, the trailer teases up some pretty dramatic images of monster fish chasing flies and fighting gamely at the end of heavy fly tackle.

The arapaima is a bucket-list fish for most of us, but I know a few folks who’ve chased them and caught them and, by all reports, they are as amazing as this short film makes them look.

Maybe someday…
