Brookings Anglers is where trout and happiness collide

In the same boat

What we do as fly anglers — what Trout Unlimited does as an organization — affects millions of others around the world. In a very real and very immediate sense, it affects our TU Business members like Brookings Anglers. These members have supported us at every level of our organization from the local chapter banquet to the lobbying in Washington, DC. Now, it’s time for us to support them because we’re all in the same boat.

If you want to be in the same boat with someone, I’d suggest Matt Canter from Brookings Anglers. Matt is a native North Carolinian, and he’s been fishing here since ripe old age of eight. He spent his youth fishing farm ponds in between family trips to the mountains and coast, where fishing was just what he did.

While attending Western Carolina University, Matt spent as much or more time on the rivers as he did in the classroom. After graduating, he immediately started guiding full-time and moved to Brevard, N.C., to be near the water he loved. Now, he’s the owner of Brookings Anglers. When Matt is not at the shop or out guiding, he is either spending time with his family or floating down one of the region’s many rivers in pursuit of trout and smallmouth bass.

Brookings has stores in both Highlands and Cashiers, N.C. And they have one of the largest inventories of fly fishing goods in the Southeast. From the outset, they have known that fly fishing is forever evolving, and they keep up with the latest and greatest gear. But at the same time, they never forget about the “old standards” that never quit working. If you need gear, they can help. And if you need a tip on where to fish, they can help there, too.

They fish the Chattooga, Tuckaseegee, Davidson, Nantahala, Little Tennessee and the French Broad Rivers, not to mention Great Smoky Mountains National Park and countless other small streams. Their guide staff is second to none. Fish with the folks from Brookings Anglers, and not only will you catch fish but you’ll walk away a better fly angler, and have stomach cramps from laughing all day.
