I’ve seen a lot of important conservation campaigns come and go. None have been more important than our Save Bristol Bay work. For more than a decade, Trout Unlimited and a cast of thousands have been at the forefront of the successful campaign to stop the proposed Pebble Mine. The decision to deny that the application for that mine was a conservation success story of worldwide significance.

The ill-conceived Pebble plan from Northern Dynasty Minerals would have created North America’s largest gold and copper mine next to important salmon rivers that drain into Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay produces one of the most prolific sockeye salmon runs left on earth, returning over 58 million sockeye last summer alone. Healthy salmon runs are the foundation of the Bristol Bay region’s economic, social, cultural and ecological well-being. The fishery there supports over 14,000 jobs including commercial fishermen, processors, lodge owners, guides, tourism operators and more.

On Monday, April 26th, 2021, 26 one of the largest fishing and hunting businesses and organizations in the country sent a letter to the Biden Administration calling for permanent protections for the people and fish-based resources of Bristol Bay.  The letter specifically asks President Biden and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to defend the decision to deny the permit application and to direct the EPA to restrict mining in Bristol Bay under Section 404c of the Clean Water Act. These permanent protections will protect the wild legacy of this special place. You can stand up for Bristol Bay by supporting this effort.

Steve and Jenn Kurian from Pride of Bristol Bay were shoulder to shoulder with us in that effort. Steve and Jenn are Gold Level TU Business Members and veteran commercial salmon fishermen. They’re also the owners of Wild for Salmon and Pride of Bristol Bay, companies founded on the principle that delicious, sustainably-harvested wild salmon could help people around the country know what makes Bristol Bay so special. What’s more, they continue to donate 1% of all sales to fund TU’s conservation work to get permanent protection for Bristol Bay.
