Trout Unlimited releases petition to celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday |

(Sept. 29, 2017) WASHINGTON D.C. — In honor of National Public Lands Day, Trout Unlimited is celebrating by releasing 8,000 reasons public lands are important. The responses come from individuals from across the country who signed a petition in support of keeping public lands in public hands and gave their own personal reasons why these lands matter to them. The petition will be sent to the White House and members of Congress and caps off a month-long celebration of public lands which features thirty public land locations throughout the country. 30 Great American Places highlighted some of our favorite places to hunt and fish, the threats they face as well as easy ways to stand up for public lands and help protect them for future generations. This isnt another me too petition. These are 8,000 Americans telling their elected officials why public lands are important to their way of life, said Chris Wood, President and CEO of Trout Unlimited. Public lands are one of the best ideas that America ever gave the rest of the world. They are an important part of what makes America great. This is why we must remain vigilant and continue to fight for our hunting and fishing heritage. One thread runs through all the places featured in 30 Great American Places: the passion for public lands is deeply personal for sportsmen and women, continued Wood. Whether it is the advocate standing up in support of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, the volunteer helping the Park Service restore brook trout in Great Smoky Mountain National Park, or the person who took the time to write to their members of Congress, public lands aren’t just a place on the map, they are a place in our hearts. Corey Fisher, senior policy director for Trout Unlimiteds Sportsmens Conservation Project, says while the threat of selling off public lands has brought together hunters and anglers across the country, keeping public lands in public hands is not enough to conserve fish and wildlife habitat and maintain great hunting and fishing. Simply recognizing the importance of these lands is not enough. We must continue to engage, Fisher said. It is important that our decision makers hear from hunters and anglers and understand that we expect them to keep it public and also protect fish and wildlife habitat.
