About Us

Shining Rock Angler is a “Mom & Pop” shop co-owned by Josh & Nina Whorton. With over 20 years in the fly fishing industry managing shops and guiding, we bring expertise and affordability to our region and beyond. Our goal is to make our shop feel like home. We want you to feel like you’ve been here a hundred times before, even if it is your first time. You’ll find a staff that is humble and eager to help, whether you’re a seasoned professional or just getting started. No edge and no pretenses, just folks that enjoy fishing as much as you do.

What we do

The Shining Rock Angler has a massive retail space with a wide variety gear for both fly and conventional angling, technical apparel, casual apparel, waders, wading boots, and more. We offer unique brands that stand out from our local competition. We strive to offer equipment that is cutting edge, but you can still find the traditional standard pieces that have never failed. Our pub space provides an excellent venue for relaxing with a cold beverage, tying flies, and conducting classes. Speaking of classes, we offer both fly fishing and fly tying classes for small groups, and courses for individuals upon request. Our focus is on you, what you need to have the best experience on water, and making sure you know how to use it. Our guided trips are competitively priced and our guides exude professionalism and have the hearts of teachers. Floats and walk & wade trips are available all year long. Where we do it

We are located in Waynesville, NC, The Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We are in the heart of southern Appalachia, surrounded by the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests which contain thousands of miles of trout streams in addition o the national park. Trophy trout waters, wild trout waters, and our native Southern Appalachian Brook Trout (locally called Specks) are located minutes from our shop. There are also numerous warmwater streams, rivers, and lakes to pursue Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Muskie, Walleye, and more right around the corner. We have amazing Bed and Breakfasts, Hotels, and Camping close by with Asheville only 30 minutes away.
