Fishing Trout Tips

Trout Tips: Lighter tippet, smaller flies

Winter or early spring fly fishing can be a lot of fun. I swear by the Henry’s Fork this time of year—some of the best fish I’ve caught in this storied river have come when I’ve had to slide down the bank over two feet of snow to get to the river.

But winter fly fishing requires a different mindset, and, particularly in tailwaters where water is low and clear, it requires lighter tippets and smaller flies.

Above, Garrison Doctor of Rep Your Water talks about how to approach low, clear water in the winter, advising anglers to look for fishable areas of the river that aren’t moving too fast, and, of course, going lighter and longer on tippets. It’s good advice for trout fishing this time of year.
