Last-minute collaboration between attorneys representing conservation and farming interests turned widespread ire for proposed rules for water use in North Coast habitat for protected fish into wide-ranging endorsement.
Years of rumors, threats and intrigue over a little-known Sierra gem, Independence Lake near Truckee, ended last week when the Nature Conservancy closed a $15 million deal to purchase the lake and nearly 2,500 forested acres that surround it.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed members to two state agencies last week.
Schwarzenegger named nine people to a commission that will decide whether dams will be built if voters approve an $11.1 billion water bond measure in November. He also named two people to a new conservancy that is intended to promote ecosystem restoration and economic improvement in the Delta.
A recent column by Paul Gullixson and several letters to the editor have discussed impending frost control regulation by the state Water Resources Control Board. But they have presented only one side of the story. We'd like to offer another.

Richard Tejeda of San Jose recently caught his first wild steelhead on the Gualala River, while on a free guided fishing trip sponsored by Trout Unlimited of California. Tejeda won the trip through a Department of Fish and Game (DFG) online contest encouraging steelhead anglers to submit their 2009 Steelhead Fishing Report-Restoration Cards via DFG's Web site.
