After hearing presentations from four advocates of dam removal at a public forum Monday night, a crowd of about 50 people remained divided about whether removal or repair is the best course of action for the failing Devil’s Backbone Dam.
Seventh and eighth grade students from the Mount Nittany Middle School Indigo team participated in a field trip to the headwaters of the Beech Creek watershed near Snow Shoe on April 23. The goal was to examine the effects of acid mine drainage on the watershed’s water chemistry and food web.
On May 18 students from Moshannon Valley Junior and Senior High School learned first hand about streams, stream life, and the impact of historical coal mining to local streams.
With all the hubbub about "sick" bass, emerging pollutants, and the hazards of "frac" mining, it is pleasant to see something positive once in a while.
