The San Juan Angler is a specialty fly shop and guide service located in downtown Durango, serving southwest Colorado and northern New Mexico. Operating out of the bustling downtown district, the shop has been creating memories for anglers that last a lifetime. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will quickly address all of your questions and needs. We cater to all ages and skill levels with our numerous trip options on our year-round fisheries. Stop in and see us upstairs for the most current fishing reports and stock up on supplies for your next day on the water.
What we do
The San Juan Angler offers year-round guiding on a number of diverse rivers and creeks in the 4 corners region. We host both half and full day walk/wade trips and float trips. Our excursions are all-inclusive and rates cover gear, equipment, flies and terminal tackle. On full days the guides also provide lunch.
Our trips take us from the world-famous San Juan River below Navajo Dam to the headwaters high up in the Weminuche Wilderness and everywhere in between. Depending on the season and your desired experience, The San Juan Angler can provide a variety of fly fishing opportunities.
If you’re looking for solitude on the water, you might consider a trip on one of our private ranches. Slow the pace down and have peace-in-mind that you’ll have the river to yourself. All private water comes with an additional fee of $75 per person per day.
We mainly focus our trips on rivers and creeks but do offer guided trips on a couple of lakes and reservoirs in the region. If you’re interested in learning more about lake fishing options, please call the shop for details.
Where we do it
The San Juan River in New Mexico is a fantastic year-round tail-water for both float and wade trips. It is a bucket list river for anglers seeking to catch trophy Rainbow and Brown trout. The Juan has one of the highest fish densities per mile in the country.
The Animas River in Durango is a natural freestone river originating in Silverton Colorado. Being a freestone, the Animas is consistently changing throughout the year from clear/cloudy, high/low, warm/cold water conditions making it a challenging and also very rewarding fishery. A former Colorado State Record Brown trout was recorded weighing in at 23 lbs.
The Los Pinos River below Vallecito Reservoir is a private tail-water offering opportunities for a fish of a lifetime. If your seeking quiet and peaceful water away from crowds consider one of our private sections on the Pine. This is one of the most spectacular and beautiful rivers loaded with wild trout.
The Florida River is another mostly private tail-water where we have access to a 2 mile stretch of river. Anglers are given the opportunity to land trophy fish from April to October. This is a fantastic fishery that has little to no fishing pressure.
The Dolores River below McPhee Reservoir is a unique tail-water located in a remote desert canyon miles off the beaten path. Enjoy great hopper fishing for spooky Rainbows and Browns. The Dolores is a tricky fishery that will challenge the most skilled anglers.
During the summer months some trips take us into the San Juan National Forest where you’ll find miles of high mountain creeks. The streams offer amazing sight fishing with dry flies for hungry Cutthroat and Brook trout. An added bonus is the breath taking views of the majestic mountain ranges.
