7/16/1999 — — On July 1, 1999, the 162-year-old Edwards Dam was breached, allowing sea-run fish to access 17 miles of the Kennebec River they hadn’t seen since before the Civil War. This video shows the moment when the backhoe breached the dam, then more than 18 minutes of the river eating away the temporary earthen cofferdam erected to facilitate the removal.
