Euro-nymphing: Getting flies into the strike zone

Euro-nymphing is all the rage these days, and that’s because it works. Drifting weighted nymphs through fishy runs using longer rods and the “high-stick” technique can be deadly for trout around the world, as competitive European fly fishers have shown for years.

Jesse Haller from Orvis shows us how to get flies down using three factors: fly weight, tippet diameter and simple technique.

Above, Jesse Haller from Orvis talks about getting flies down to the right depth using the Euro-nymphing technique. Taking into account the weight of the fly (or flies) you’re using, the diameter of the tippet (the thinner it is, the quicker it will sink) and the technique (Jesse demonstrates the tuck cast to give your line a bit slack and hasten the sink rate) is key to getting the most out of Euro-nymphing.

Euro-nymphing can be a deadly method for catching trout, but, just like any fly fishing sub-discipline, it needs to be done correctly. Check out the video and see for yourself.
