Trout Tips: Casting from a tight spot

We’ve all been there. The fish are rising on the far bank, and you can reach them … if only you had enough room behind you for a backcast. But you don’t.

What to do?

In the video above, TU’s Kirk Deeter demonstrates a simple technique borrowed from spey casters that simply helps you get the most out of a roll cast without pushing too much line behind you and getting caught in the obstruction that prevents a backcast in the first place.

As Kirk notes, it’s a great way to incorporate techniques from spey fishing to single-handed rod fishing. He makes it look pretty easy, so don’t be frustrated if you don’t get it right away. Practice, and you’ll soon find yourself roll casting to those rising trout across the river. And, even if you don’t know it, you’ll actually be spey casting!
