Trout Tips: Do new anglers a favor

Editor’s note: The following is exerpted from TU’s book, “Trout Tips,” available online for overnight delivery.

As somebody who has covered fishing for more than 25 years, I have realized, hopefully not too late, that I relied too heavily on the people I was writing about. Too often, I let them tie the knots, pick the flies and tell me where to cast. I didn’t learn the way other anglers do, and it costs me when I go out on my own.

Do new anglers a favor and help them just enough to get them going, but let them discover how to become a better angler for themselves. People often tell me, “You must be a great angler,” and I respond with, “Nope. I just know who to go with.”

It’s the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts.
