Fishing Trout Tips

Trout Tips: Small stream stealth

Trout in small, backcountry streams are opportunists, but that doesn’t mean theyr’e stupid. The old rule still applies: If you can see the fish, chances are, they can see you, too.

When I fish small water, I like to put structure between me and the fish whenever possible, and I like to make my profile as small as I can (no easy feat for a 6-foot, 5-inch guy with a healthy belly). When the sun is out, I make a conscious effort to keep my shadow off the water, and (I broke this rule in the video above, but green on green just doesn’t show up well on the camera) I generally wear muted colors.

For backcountry trout, success often depends on the little things.
