TROUT Tip – finding trout

Early in the fishing season, it can be tough to once again remember where to find trout and how to read water.

Often, we jump right in and start casting out of pure excitement but be assured it is better to take a few breaths before beginning and be observant.

Slow down and approach the water from downstream

Slow down.

Approach the water slowly and from downstream.
look at the surface for fish rising and for shadows

Look at the surface, but don’t forget about shadows, too.

Watch the water’s surface for rises. Watch for fish-shaped shadows on the streambed.
check surroundings for bug hatches

Check your surroundings for what bugs are hatching.

Take time to look amongst the bushes and along the rocks for bugs. Are there any flying through the air? Pick up a rock or two to check out nymphs clinging to them.

Each of these variables can change season to season and even from day to day, so it pays to slow down, observe and create a plan before your first cast is flung.

Of course, good sunglasses can help.
