Kids are back in school. The summer sun has lost its edge. Things are definitely cooling off here in the Rockies. It’s almost time for in-earnest fall fishing.
Around here, that means we’re getting ready for the fall run of browns up the Henry’s Fork and the South Fork and, of course, the big, B-run of steelhead are working their way up the Salmon as I type this (although this year’s run looks to be really, really low, with less than 500 swimming past Lower Granite Dam as of Aug. 21—that’s about 10 percent of the five-year average).
And that, of course, means streamers. Fall is my favorite time of year to swing big flies for big fish.
