Pop quiz: OK, grab a map and point to Altmar, N.Y. That’s what I thought. I couldn’t do it either. But people who know fishing in upstate New York can do it in (forgive me) a New York minute.

The Salmon River is a tributary of Lake Ontario. It was named for the epic runs of Atlantic salmon that it once supported. Now, it is the epicenter of fishing for both chinook (king) and coho salmon fishing in the Northeast. Beginning in late summer and early fall both kings and cohos begin to move into the river. These are big, strong fish that you’ll readily find in the 25 pound range — the fish of a lifetime.
Steelhead fishing on the Salmon River is unlike any other experience in the northeast. The fish enter the river soon after the king salmon have begun to spawn and will stay in the river system until spring when they return to the lake after spawning. This is the fish of dreams— the fish of a thousand casts. Steelhead are a truly acrobatic fish with strong runs, and fishing for them is characterized by heart-pounding action.
