Keeping Alaskan women on the water

Trout Unlimited Alaska’s Women on the Water (WoW) brings together women for free, hands-on fishing trips and fly tying events.

WoW launched in 2023 to create opportunities to build and share fly fishing skills in a supportive environment and connect like-minded women with a passion for the outdoors.

These trips have been incredibly popular and filled up quickly. To expand our capacity, Trout Unlimited partnered with Lakeview Outfitters in 2025 and together we secured grant funding through the FishAmerica Foundation. This partnership allows us to significantly increase access for women looking to get started or learn more about fishing.

Support from FishAmerica Foundation allows us to host six WoW fishing trips this summer and additional fly tying events throughout the year.  All events are free of charge. Gear is available for those who do not have their own. Apply now to join us on a fishing trip this summer. Applications are due May 15, 2026.

Participants will be notified by email in early June. There will be a waitlist for anyone not initially selected, so keep an eye out on your email up to the week of the trip.

Fishing in Alaska’s backcountry is as rewarding as it is challenging. From navigating slick rocks and swift currents, to walking on uneven ground for up to three miles while carrying gear, to sharing space with wildlife, these environments require awareness and physical readiness. We encourage all applicants to consider these factors when applying. We will prioritize women for the float trips who may not be able to spend a day walking and wading in creeks.

To continue building community, we offer many fly tying events throughout the year.

Anyone is welcome to participate in a fly tying event; no application is necessary. These events are great ways to build skills and meet like-minded fishing partners.

Ladies Fly Tying at Lakeview Outfitters will occur on various mornings in the summer, so you can tie a few flies in Cooper Landing before getting out for a day of fishing. Ladies Barflies is hosted by TU at various locations in the greater Anchorage area and will occur monthly throughout the fall and winter.
