Alaska service members can apply for fly-fishing trip

Last fall, the Trout Unlimited Alaska Program was pleased to host the first annual Alaska Armed Services Fishing Trip in partnership with Kinross Gold Corporation. Last year’s trip was a great opportunity to give back to members of the armed forces by sharing a truly Alaskan experience we all love: fly fishing.

Our inaugural Alaska Armed Services Fishing Trip was hosted at Wilderness Place Lodge on Lake Creek, a remote river nestled at the base of the Alaska Range on the West side of the Susitna River, and a thrill for those who were able to participate in the trip.  Lake Creek offered a variety of salmon species, including hard-fighting coho and chum, and plentiful rainbow trout.  Read more about the 2018 Military Tip here.

Last year’s trip was such a great success we are excited to continue the annual tradition, and announce details for the 2019!

What & When: From Aug. 13-16, we will host 12 veteran or active-duty members of our armed forces on a trip with Denali Fly Fishing Guides, a TU-endorsed business, in Cantwell, Alaska, to chase Arctic grayling and all their iridescent beauty.

Activities: Arctic grayling are known for their aggressive personality and willingness to take flies on the surface, making them ideal species to chase on the fly and exciting to catch.  The trip will include an evening fishing session, one day raft and fishing tip on the Nenana River, and one day exploring the pristine streams of the Denali Highway.  Food, travel, guided fishing, all fishing equipment, and comfortable accommodations at Backwoods Lodge are provided at no cost to attendees.

Eligibility and Application: This trip is open to all ALASKA RESIDENT active or retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces.  Whether a life-long angler or novice, this trip will be an excellent opportunity to enjoy Alaska’s outdoors, further your own fly-fishing skills, or, if you’re brand new to the sport, add a new outdoor skill to your repertoire that can be enjoyed anywhere life may take you.  To apply or learn more about the 2019 TU-Kinross Armed Service Fishing Trip in Cantwell, Alaska, from Aug. 13-16, download our application form and submit it to Ebooton@tu.org.  Applications are due by June 30.
