Pescador on the Fly makes great gear that travels well

Pescador on the Fly

A year ago, almost to the day, I wrote this about Jeff Ditsworth and his outfit, Pescador on the Fly: “Maybe you or someone you know is looking for a quality fly rod, but the up-front cost is holding you back. Or maybe there’s a young person on your list who needs some entry-level gear. Entry level gear that is surprisingly high quality for the price.  Have we got a deal for you. Actually our friends at Pescador on the Fly have a deal for you. They have a package where everything is included. Like the special they’re offering right now on their Econ 101 Trout Combo package.”

I painted a picture of a business that makes entry level gear. I may have underestimated this small company in West Des Moines, IA. They’ve used this crazy year to grow their product line and put their brand on the map in a big way.

Read now what my good friend Tim Romano said recently in TROUT: “You don’t see many five-piece travel rods these days. Personally, I think that’s a shame, because I am a purveyor of anything that makes fishing travel easier. Some will contend that the more pieces a rod is made with, the worse it casts. But that’s not the case with the Pescador on the Fly El Jefe Packable Fly Rod Combo. This is a six-piece rod and reel combo that breaks down into a mere 22 inches, comes fully lined and casts beautifully. I threw dainty dry flies with it for a day and had a wide grin on my face the whole time.”

Don’t get me wrong, they still make the Econ 101, a great entry level rod that won’t break your budget. And currently they’re offering their “angler economic stimulus package” – gear that would normally set you back $150 that they’re offering free with all combo purchases. If you are someone or if you know someone who had a fly fishing experience this year and wants to get started with their own gear, this is a great starter kit.

A tip of the ol’ Gasson Stetson to Jeff and Pescador on the Fly. In a year when so many things seemed to be so hard, they made something easier. Tim’s right – traveling with fly fishing gear can be a pain. And some gear that travels well doesn’t fish well at all. But this is an outfit that makes real gear that packs easy and fishes great.

And they continue to be great TU supporters. Jeff made the decision early on to become a TU Business member. And right out of the chute, they made the decision to devote a portion of their sales back to conservation. That’s a real commitment for a small company. But it’s the kind of commitment that makes them special.
