Here’s one for you western anglers who are wondering, with all the late winter snow and the spring rain, if we’re ever going to see fishable water levels anytime soon.

The answer is, the water’s already fishable. We just need to find the places where trout are holding amid the near-constant temperature changes and water level rises and drops.

If you’re near any classic western trout stream, chances are you’re also close a fishable stretch of river that features big rocks that help break up the current and give trout places to rest during high water. Or, as Orvis’ Dave Jensen describes these structural hide-outs, boulder gardens.

Above, Dave and his wife Amelia walk us through how to fish one of these great in-stream structures. It’s good stuff. Enjoy.
